FRIDAY

PARTY: Hirshhorn After Hours (Independence Avenue at Seventh Street SW) presents an evening of gallery talks, exhibits, and dancing (to the tunes of Nancy Whang and The Crystal Ark). 8 p.m.-midnight. $25.

MOVIES: The sixth annual Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival kicked off yesterday wtih a screening of Helldriver and continues with over a dozen films through this Sunday at Artisphere (1101 Wilson Boulevard Arlington, VA). Tonight catch The Watermen at 5 p.m., The Millennium Bug at 7:30 p.m., The Dead at 9:50 p.m., and Little Deaths at fifteen past midnight. $8 each film or $70 for a weekend pass (14 films).

>> AFI Silver Theatre (8633 Colesville Road Silver Spring, MD) begins its Halloween on Screen set tonight with Witchfinder General (10:45 p.m., $11) a 1968 film based on an Edgar Allan Poe poem. The other movies in the series, which runs through the end of the month, will include classics like The Last Man on Earth (October 16 and 19) and Nosferatu (October 28), and more recent flicks like Shaun of the Dead (October 21, 22, 28, and 29) and Dead Snow (October 22).

THEATER: Landless Theare Co. presents Evil Dead: The Musical, complete with a splash zone, tonight through October 30th at FCAC (15 W. Patrick Street Frederick MD). 8 p.m. Tickets: $20.

>> Community theater group Capital City Players present Circle Mirror Transformation, the story of four participants in a community-center drama class, at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (545 7th Street SE) tonight through October 22. 8 p.m. $20.

FESTIVAL: Kids Euro Festival events begin today and continue through November 10. The festival includes over 200 free events (puppetry, storytelling, dance, magic, and more) from the European Union community. Consult the full schedule for all the options.

FOOD & DRINK: Chef Eddie Huang of Baohaus serves up food for a popup event at Toki Undergroud (1234 H Street NE) this Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m.).

COMEDY: Nine female comedians take the stage for Comedy On the Table, a benefit for House of Ruth at The Velvet Lounge (915 U Street NW) tonight. 7-9 p.m. $5.

BASKETBALL: In case you missed it, yesterday we rounded up all the Midnight Madness events going on in the area tonight.

TALK: Meet three under-25 year old Young Explorers and hear about their adventures while you enjoy drinks and small bites at National Geographic Live (1600 M Street NW) tonight. 7 p.m. $30.

MUSIC: Throwing Muses shred at the Black Cat (1811 14th Street NW) tonight. The Cheniers also perform. 9 p.m. $20.

SATURDAY

BEER: Rustico’s Alexandria location (827 Slaters Lane Alexandria VA) is the site of their Oktoberfest block party this Saturday. Come out for over 50 types of beer on draft, pretzels and other German food, and activities for all ages. 12-5 p.m. Free to attend, tickets for food and drink onsite.

FOOD & DRINK: Hit Taste of Georgetown (Wisconsin Avenue and M Street NW) this Saturday for lots of food, live music, and a “Pumpkin Food Fight” where chefs compete to prepare the best pumpkin dish. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Food tickets are $5 for one tasting, $20 for five. Drink tickets are $3 for 1 tasting and $10 for 4.

>> Food Network’s Alton Brown and local chef Bob Kinkead will speak at the McLean Uncorked Food & Wine Festival at the McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Avenue McLean VA) this Saturday. The event is also a Wine and Tasting Festival (10 a.m.-5 p.m.), featuring a variety of wine seminars ($30 for a wine drinker’s wristband, seminars individually priced) and a Wine-and-Dine-Around (5-10:30 p.m., $75), a trip by Old Town Trolley to three restaurants: Evo Bistro for appetizers, Café Oggi for the main course, and Assaggi Osteria for dessert.

PETS: Walk for the Animals with the Washington Humane Society at the Marie Reed Learning Center (2200 Champlain Street NW) this Saturday to help end pet homelessness in DC. Adopt a new furry friend at the event and the WHS will waive all fees. 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

YARD SALE: Pyramid Atlantic art center (8230 Georgia Avenue Silver Spring MD) is throwing an Upscale Yard Sale Saturday, featuring antiques, furniture, collectibles, jewelry, and more. 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

OUTDOORS: REI and the National Park Service present Feet in the Street at Fort Dupont Park (Fort Davis Drive and Ridge Road SE) Saturday, an afternoon of outdoor activites. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Free.

FAIR: Kids’ Corner Day Care Center is throwing a Fall Fair at Mitchell Park (23rd and S Streets NW) Saturday. There will be performances by The Great Zucchini, Georgetown University Children’s Theater, Miss Amy’s Music Makers, and others, as well as hay rides, pumpkin painting, soccer classes, and more. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Free to attend the performances at the fair, tickets will be sold for individual activities. An all inclusive bracelet will be sold for $20.

TEA: The Grille at Morrison House (116 South Alfred Street Alexandria VA) is hosting a “Spooky” Story Time Tea for kids this Saturday. Children who attend are invited to dress-up in black and orange or a costume, and come out for crafts, a reading of “On a Windy Night” by Nancy Raines Day, and tea (served along with sanwiches, scones, and sweets). FASHION: Head to Eastern Market’s North Hall (225 7th Street SE) Saturday for a Full Length Runway Show of DC designers’ work, part of ReadysetDC’s Fashion weekend. 8 p.m.-11:55 p.m. $40 (includes open bar).

BURLESQUE: The Red Palace (1212 H Street NE) takes it up a notch Saturday with not just a burlesque show, but an acrobatic burlesque show. Come out to see the flipping and stripping of Trixie & Monkey’s Brilliant Stupidity. Shows at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. $12 in advance, $15 day of.

VAMPIRES: Twihards and Twilight-haters alike may enjoy the Raspberry Brothers’ mocking of New Moon at Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike Arlington VA) Saturday. 9:30 p.m. $15.

WINE: DC Wine Week kicks off at 8 p.m. Saturday with an Opening Bash at Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar (223 Pennsylvania Avenue SE), and continues through October 22 with a variety of tastings and events.

SCREENPLAYS: Put on your judgy pants and head out to the fifth Screenplay Competition, at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church (900 Massachusetts Avenue NW), from the DC Shorts Film Festival. Actors and screenwriters will present six scripts and you get to vote for your favorite. The winner gets $1,000, plus another $1,000 once the film is made. 7 p.m. $10.

HOME MOVIES: Letelier Theater (3251 Prospect Street NW) hosts Home Movie Day, a celebration and screening of amateur films, this Saturday. 12-4:30 p.m. Free.

MUSIC: Loretta Lynn performs at the 9:30 Club (815 V Street NW) Saturday, in a show that was rescheduled from March. Southern Culture on the Skids also take the stage. 7 p.m. $55.

DEDICATION: The official dedication ceremony of the new Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial (1964 Independence Avenue SW) takes place this Sunday with speeches by President Obama, Dan Rather, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Aretha Franklin, and others. 8 a.m. Free. Also check out the numerous MLK related events taking place at the DC Public Library this weekend.

SHOPPING: Prepare for the next Tweed Ride and Seersucker Social by picking up some dapper clothing items at the Dandies and Quaintrelles’ Second Hand Sundays pop-up consignment shop at the Science Club (1136 19th Street NW) this Sunday. 2-8 p.m.
