If your commute includes crossing over a river or gap around Washington, there were certainly some concerning headlines to be read this morning.
“Key Bridge, 14th St. Bridge among 215 area bridges rated structurally deficient,” blared the Post, noting that “Two hundred fifteen bridges in the Washington region are structurally deficient, including three of the five major bridges that cross the Potomac into Washington”. TBD’s On Foot blog went a little more local with “Transportation for America names D.C.’s 10 worst heavy-traffic bridges,” adding that the District’s performance is indicative of the report’s “damning picture of how infrastructure has begun to fall apart throughout the nation.”
Of course, if you’re just scanning the headlines, you’re not really getting the whole picture. (I mean, duh.) The District’s Department of Transportation is currently working on fixing many of these spans. A simple glance at the agency’s project dashboard shows work underway along New York Avenue, K Street, H Street, Massachusetts Avenue, 11th Street, 14th Street, 16th Street, and the Key Bridge, among others.
So, drivers, put down that knife and fork — it’s not quite time to start cracking open skulls and feasting on the goo inside quite yet.
