Cheddar biscuits with prosciutto at Jack Rose. Dish of the Week: Cheddar bay biscuits
Where: Jack Rose
It’s not a secret that I am a fan of Red Lobster’s cheddar bay biscuits. It is probably the only reason I would patronize that restaurant. But since you’d be hard-pressed to find a Red Lobster in the District, there need to be other ways to get that fix of cheddary, garlicky goodness.
One of simplest ways to do so is to make them yourself. All it takes is a simple biscuit recipe — or for those seeking a fast solution, Bisquick batter — incorporating cheddar. Then baste the cooked biscuits with butter mixed with garlic powder, dried onion and parsley, and salt. (They’re even better with sharp cheddar.)
But if you’re too lazy to make biscuits yourself, the cheddar biscuits with prosciutto at Jack Rose are a worthy and perhaps better substitute. The two-bite biscuits are each stuffed with slices of prosciutto and accompanied by an oregano-spiked herbed oil. Each biscuit is wonderfully light, and make for a great snack alongside a beer. And if you want to go a step heartier, there’s always the previously featured pork cupcake at Bourbon Steak.

A Watershed frying moment
Todd Gray’s Watershed continues its monthly Friday Supper Series they launched last month with a family-style fish fry tonight at 7 p.m. Future dinners include a November oyster roast and December goose roast as the weather turns colder. Each dinner features passed bites (like crispy main clams with preserved lemon mayonnaise and sardines on brioche), a family style/buffet dinner (Gray is frying up catfish and serving potato crusted fluke), DC Brau and live music. The $75 cost per person includes tax and gratuity. Even better, if you live in the NoMa area, the dinner is buy-one-get-one free.
