MOVIE: The Arabian Sights Film Festival kicks off tonight and continues through November 6, showcasing the newest films from the Arab world with a special focus on Egyptian cinema. The opening night event tonight at the Embassy of France (4101 Reservoir Road NW) will feature a screening of The Italian followed by a wine and cheese reception. 7 p.m. $20.

TALK: “Food Frights” at the National Archives (Constitution Avenue and 7th Street NW) takes a look at the past and current state of food safety in the U.S., with host David Gregory of Meet the Press, and speakers Chef José Andrés; Philip Derfler, USDA/FSIS deputy administrator; Suzanne Junod, FDA senior historian; and Caroline Smith DeWaal, Director of the Food Safety Program, Center for Science in the Public Interest. 7 p.m. Free.

BOOKS: Justice Stephen Breyer discusses his book Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View at Sixth and I Historic Synagogue (600 I Street NW) tonight. Doors 6 p.m., talk 7 p.m. Tickets are $22 and include a copy of the book.

PHOTOGRAPHY: DCist’s own Pat Padua presents his photography as part of an art show with paintings by L.M. Smith at the Hillyer Art Space (9 Hillyer Court NW). To celebrate opening night, there will be a reception at L2 Lounge (3315 Cady’s Alley NW) from 6-9 p.m. $5.
