As it turns out, Mayor Vince Gray’s proposed movie concession tax hike is about a lot more than simply funding an incentive program for a cineplex east of the Anacostia River. In fact, Gray’s got one particular Hollywood star he’d like to try and attract to the District.

From the Mayor’s office press release about the tax proposal:

Several feature film and television projects including NBC’s “1600 Penn” and “The Firm”, Netflix’s “House of Cards,” and ABC’s “Secret Cabinet” have expressed interest in filming in the District as well as TNT’s “Covert Affairs.” It is believed this legislation will convince actor and producer Adam Sandler, who has expressed interest in the District of Columbia as a location, to bring his next major motion picture to D.C.

That’s right, Washington — your mayor is imposing surtaxes on the movie-going public because he really wants to see the braintrust behind You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, The Waterboy, and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry to film his next sure-fire Oscar winner here in the city.

Of course, Sandler is filming a picture titled Hotel Transylvania right now, so, you know, maybe we should have seen this coming.
