UPDATE (3:45 p.m.): According to D.C. Fire and EMS, firefighters are currently investigating a “busted pipe” under the pavement. It does not appear to be dangerous, but the investigation is still ongoing. We’d avoid the area for a bit while things get cleared up.
The above image, taken by DCist photography contributor Kevin Carroll, is from the 500 block of 10th Street NW, where smoke has been billowing out from a manhole in the center of the road. The street has obviously been blocked to traffic and pedestrians, and it appears as if authorities are working on getting to the bottom of the cause. We’ll have more details as they become available.
