>> On Saturday night, three people attempted a carjacking by first yelling, “trick or treat.” A driver stopped at a light near 13th Street and Arkansas Avenue NW when approached by three people in white masks. They grabbed his shirt when he rolled down the window, but he was able to drive away unharmed and the attackers fled the scene.
>> On Thursday, Andre Mayo, 46, a patient at Maryland’s maximum-security mental hospital, killed fellow inmate Rogelio Mondragon, 40, making it the second fatal attack in a week inside Clifton T. Perkins Hospital and the third in the past year. Mayo was held without bond Friday in Howard County on a murder charge.
>> Police believe one couple tried to rob three Virginia banks in an hour and a half Saturday: Sun Trust Bank at 5922 Richmond Hwy., the Wells Fargo Bank at 6300 Richmond Hwy., and the BB&T bank at 6618 Richmond Hwy.
>> William Knight, 20, of D.C., was arrested in the killing of Howard University freshman Alonzo James Guyton.
>> Two men allegedly assaulted a woman Saturday morning while she was at her car in the 1800 block of Beaver Creek Lane. The woman, who was visiting friends and not from the area, was able to escape from her attackers. The men are described as black and between 6 ft and 6 ft, 2 inches tall.
>> A brother and sister have been sentenced to prison Friday for their roles in the August 2009 robbery and murder of D.C. store owner, Shahubbudin Rana. Shanika Robinson was sentenced to 54 years, and her brother Leon was sentenced to 75-and-a-half years. Robinson married Rana’s brother to get him a green card, with the agreement that she would receive monthly payments of $2,000. But Robinson’s payments stopped coming when Rana learned she was having an affair. She then got her brother and another man to rob the store. Rana was stabbed and beaten during the robbery.
>> Police charged 21-year-old Jose Reyes Mejia-Varela with first-degree murder in the March slaying of assistant Burger King manager Jacinta “Patty” Ayala, who was shot to death while preparing to open the restaurant. Mejia-Varela was a former co-worker.
>> Justin M. Coleman, 36, a former fourth-grade teacher in Alexandria’s public schools, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for producing child pornography.
