Villaraigosa

Villaraigosa

Far be it from me to fully understand why Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa felt the need to dump all over the District this morning. But, hey, it wouldn’t really be fair to people like Spike Mendelson if we didn’t call him out on it.

Villaraigosa’s comments, as noted by local L.A. politics blog The City Maven:

Then, the mayor took a moment to make it clear he doesn’t travel to Washington, D.C. to visit the monuments and museums.

“I am in Washington, D.C. more times than I would care to be, trust me. I love when (the media) talk about how often I’m there as if going to Washington is — you know, when you’re looking at the places you want to visit around the world — as if that’s a place I wanted to visit.”

Huh. Those are some mighty tough words from the leader of a city which most artifacts of popular culture depict as either a futuristic dystopia, a squalid hellhole, a corral point for the country’s most vicious convicts, or the first place extraterrestrials will destroy once they decide to occupy our planet.

Maybe D.C. Mayor Vince Gray can bring it up with Villaraigosa the next time the U.S. Conference of Mayors get together — after all, the Los Angeles Mayor recently appointed Gray the Vice Chair of the Conference’s Children, Health and Human Services Standing Committee.
