For 42 years, District residents and tourists have seen Tourmobile’s signature blue and white buses drive circles around the National Mall. After today, the Tourmobile will be no more.
Today is the Tourmobile’s last day as the National Mall’s sole provider of guided tours, and the National Park Service hasn’t yet indicated what, if anything, could replace it. The beginning-of-the-end for Tourmobile started this summer, when the City Paper reported that the operator’s monopoly may have been illegal. More recently, Tourmobile was said to be in dire economic straits.
If you’re feeling nostalgic, you’ve got until 6 p.m. today to plop down the $32 that will take your around the Mall as many times as you want.
Going forward, the many tourists who make their way to the National Mall may have to find more creative ways to get around. Despite being hassled by Park Police, pedicabs are an option; Capital Bikeshare will soon be making its way down to the Mall, too.
