Photo by Tony DeFilippo.Good morning, Washington. This morning, news broke that the 17-year-old who was shot in the head on Halloween in Georgetown has died. Mark Segraves reports that the boy was taken off life support over the weekend. The death is the first connected to a spate of shootings which occurred on October 31; so far, police have made one arrest in connection with the now-fatal Georgetown shooting.
Occupy Tension: The relationship between Occupy DC protesters and the Metropolitan Police Department is about to get rockier: Chief Cathy Lanier said yesterday that she’d be cracking down on protesters, noting that police “do not condone nor will we tolerate violence or aggression” and that the protests had become “increasingly confrontational and violent.” We’ll get our first real chance to see whether Lanier means it or not at 12:30 this afternoon, as Occupy demonstrators plan to march to the big CityCenterDC project in protest of what they call discriminatory hiring practices by developer Clarke International.
Cop Struck By Car During Motorcade: Once you live here for so long, you tend to consider presidential motorcades just another thing that happens sometimes. But things can go wrong — like last night, when a police officer was struck by a car on the 4500 block of Connecticut Avenue NW while President Obama traveled to a fundraiser at a private residence. The officer suffered several injuries, but none of them are considered life-threatening. No charges have been filed against the driver so far.
Metrobus, Fire Truck Crash: A Metrobus and a fire truck were involved in an early morning crash at the intersection of Wheeler Road SE and Valley Avenue SE today, injuring two people. The two vehicles collided at 1:09 a.m., and a firefighter and passenger were shaken up. NBCWashington has the video from the scene.
Briefly Noted: Virginia votes today — if they can find their polling place, that is…Arlington FBI agent arrested for shooting inside Hawaii McDonald’s…The case for public transportation…Metro Connection rides along with a Bikeshare rebalancer…Va. Gov. McDonnell heading to Israel…You know, for what these kids and their parents pay to go to school at G.W., the least you could do is at least try to teach them…Who says that the government doesn’t listen?
This Day in DCist: Last year, the Council considered bullying legislation, and we told you how local chefs use squash; in 2007, we learned that Anthony Bourdain was a big Ben’s Chili Bowl fan.
