Yesterday, we reported on one of the most exciting additions to the District’s Twittersphere — Councilmember Marion Barry (D-Ward 8). And yes, it really is his account.

Okay, so he’s got consultants working for him, but still.

Since Barry joined Sunday afternoon, the mayor-for-life has only composed 19 tweets — but, boy have there been some gems. Last night, he tweeted a picture of himself gettin’ down with the “lovely Councilmember Mary Cheh” at Mayor Vince Gray’s birthday party. He jokingly called NBC4’s Tom Sherwood, the dean of the local press corps, “Uncle Tom Sherwood.” Earlier yesterday afternoon, he explained his tweeting style thusly: “I twag: i.e., tweets with swag.”

Such twagging seems to have its supporters: as of this morning, Barry had over 1,300 supporters, quickly making his way towards “lovely Councilmember Mary Cheh’s” 1,551 and onwards towards Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells’ 3,747.
