Photo by Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie.Good morning, Washington. That was a nice run of balmy 60 degree November weather we had there, wasn’t it? Today, the forecast calls for chilly temperatures, wind, rain and, yes, some snow.
Evans and Holder: There’s a pair of interesting profiles of prominent D.C. political figures by Alan Suderman for you to read this morning. The first is about Jack Evans, in which the Ward 2 Councilmember reveals that he is the “king of earmarks,” and thinks Kwame Brown is an “idiot,” among several other gems. The second is about U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who’s good buddies with Mayor Vince Gray and Council Chair Kwame Brown — so much so, that some are questioning whether or not he really has the drive or the ethical standing to completely investigate Gray and Brown’s recent ethical lapses.
WaPo and Occupy: Some interesting thoughts from the Post’s editorial board this morning regarding the Occupy DC demonstration. “Since turning out the lights isn’t an option, it’s important that officials develop ways to deal with what could be an increasingly thorny situation,” concludes the board in a clear endorsement of the raids which recently took place in New York. The paper also spoke with former MPD deputy chief Robert W. Klotz, who compares the Occupy demonstration to a 1979 protest where farmers set up camp on the Mall for months before snow moved in. Elsewhere: as the group readies to march on the Key Bridge this afternoon and bolsters its numbers with labor union members, Mayor Vince Gray says that the city needs to work to maintain a “great delicate balance” with the protesters.
Hit and Runs: It’s no secret that Washington’s streets are often the scene of violent interactions between cars, cyclists and pedestrians. But as WTOP reports, the frequency of the worst of those incidents is higher here than in any other jurisdiction. Between 2000 and 2009 in D.C., 76 people were killed in incidents where a driver fled the scene; that rate is higher than Maryland, Virginia and every other state in the union. Nationwide, 16,382 people were killed in hit and run accidents during the same time period.
Briefly Noted: Eight people charged in Wilson Ramos kidnapping…Meanwhile, Nationals are wheeling and dealing at general manager meetings…D.C. planning boss Harriet Tregoning has some advice for Gotham City…Teens arrested for detonating IED on Chesapeake shore…Those folks in Gaithersburg sure can handle their budget…Commence drooling.
This Day in DCist: Last year, faux Metro posters provided some rare truth in advertising, we first learned of Montgomery Blair Sibley’s plans to cultivate medical marijuana and Columbia Heights was finally blessed with all-night pancakes.
