Last Friday, we picked up on a tweet from a former Black Cat employee that Black Cat Bill, the club’s well-known yet informal doorman, had died. The City Paper reports today that William “Willy” Turner is in fact alive, though in poor health.
We’re of course happy to hear the news that Turner hasn’t passed, yet completely embarrassed that we foolishly didn’t properly follow up to, you know, check if it was true. That’s partly the danger of relying on Twitter for tips and rumors — plenty of times they’re true and to the point, but plenty of other times they’re not. We should have known that when we ran with the post.
We’d like to publicly apologize to both Turner and our readers for this terrible error. It won’t happen again.
