Just last week, I walked by a man with a small Tom Petty cardboard cut-out and video camera in Mt. Pleasant. My journalistic curiosity must have been particularly dull that day, because I didn’t think twice about it and simply went on my merry way.

Today, I’ve learned a cardinal rule of local journalism: if you ever see someone with a Tom Petty cardboard cut-out and a video camera, always stop and ask them what they’re doing. Had I done that, I would have known that it was for a video of Petty’s cutout head traveling around the District on a remote controlled car to the tune of “Kings Highway.”
