Photo by little-wingsGeorgetown University may be well known for being something of an establishment university, the sort of place where a young politician-to-be can begin to amass a sense of what it takes to be powerful and the types of friends required to get there. But it’s also a great place for hipsters and vegans.
Or so said CollegeMagazine.com, which ranked Georgetown as its tenth most hipster university (NYU took top honors):
In addition to politically focused, Washington, D.C. ranks as one of the top hipster cities around. And this year it seems like more students are adding “hipster” to their resumes, especially at Georgetown. As a top U.S. shopping destination, Georgetown kids build their hipster style at the vintage shops, thrift stores and cute boutiques just minutes from campus. But they aren’t your typical hipsters; many Georgetown students claim they’re hipster because their style is “ironic” and errs on the side of preppiness. Georgetown student Christina Nelson couldn’t define the typical Georgetown hipster: “I wouldn’t be a hipster if I answered your question.” Georgetown’s strong liberal arts program, top-rated student radio station and the unmistakably cool D.C. atmosphere are just icing on the (dairy-free) cake.
As for how inviting it is to non-meat eaters, the university stood at third on PETA’s list of most vegan-friendly small universities:
After being absent from last year’s list, Georgetown has returned in 2011, thanks in part to visually appealing entrées such as seitan gyros with soy yogurt, vegan beef stir-fries, vegan sloppy Joes, and vegan barbecue riblets. Given that Georgetown is a school known for producing presidents, high-scoring athletes, Supreme Court justices, and other influential figures, the vegan-friendly menu at this historic campus gives us hope for the future.
Not to be ignored, American University slotted in at tenth, called a “beacon of hope” for “hearty and healthy options” in the District.
As for George Washington University — the lesser Georgetown, as I like to call it* — the best it could muster was eighth on the list of most expensive universities.
*I went to grad school at Georgetown, and no, I don’t really call GW this.
