On Saturday, the Marshall Heights Bison youth football team completed its march through the Pee Wee division of the Pop Warner Super Bowl tournament in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The kids from Southeast D.C. put on an imposing display of aggressive running and nearly impenetrable defense in a 34-6 rout of the East Bay WildcatsWarriors from Oakland, Calif. to secure national bragging rights in the 11-to-12-year-old division.

As City Paper’s Dave McKenna observed last week, the championship game began with another episode of the Vincent Abney show, who scored the Bison’s opening touchdown on a long open-field run with six minutes left in the first quarter. The remainder of the first half was actually fairly quiet, but in the second half the Bison stampeded back to life.

Another D.C. squad, the Beacon House Falcons, reached the title game in the Jr. Pee Wee (11-and-under) division, but lost 13-7 in double overtime.

Both teams will be toasted tonight at the Wilson Building by Mayor Vince Gray with the traditional end-of-season custom for youth sports—a pizza party.
