Learning something new can be quite daunting. The new terminology, concepts, and putting it all into practice often entails much more effort than originally thought. Luckily, having a good teacher is often one of the best ways to tackle tough topics. A guide who has a deep comprehension of the subject matter coupled with a logical presentation can make the most complex of subjects make sense and even enjoyable; even the complicated world of beer.

Starting on January 21, the Neighborhood Restaurant Group will begin its Beer Academy at Rustico Arlington headed by Food & Wine “Sommelier of the Year” and D.C.’s resident beer evangelist Greg Engert about many of the various topics concerning beer.

The introductory class will be an overview of how to appreciate the flavor spectrum of beer and subsequent classes will delves into topics such as casks ales, sour ales, farmhouse ales of the world, and brewing locally vs. locally sourced brewing. Each class will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturdays at Rustico in Arlington, and is priced at $24 per person; it includes the 2-hour tutorial and the accompanying tastes (at least six beers per class) that coincide with the lecture. To incorporate the pairing aspect, Rustico will offer their full brunch menu a la carte with standouts such as buttermilk biscuit sliders, sweet potato skins and crispy deviled eggs to the attendees.

The Beer Academy will commence on January 21 (this class is sold out so they will be offering an additional introductory class on the 28) and run every four weeks, with subsequent classes scheduled for February 18, March 17, April 14, May 12 and June 9. Dedicated students, who wish to enroll in the full year will receive a discount of $6 off each class (additional discounts for packages of three, six and nine classes are also offered). To reserve a spot for The Beer Academy, call Rustico at (571) 384-1820.

This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the most respected beer directors in the country who not only has the knowledge, but the passion that makes the learning experience worthwhile. Be sure to take the opportunity now, since Engert will be dividing him time even further when he helps launch NRG’s new “boutique brewery” slated to open in late 2012.

Cheers.
