Though it’s not clear exactly what the draw of all things prohibition era is for us early 21st century kids, the vibe is in the air. Suckers for Lost Generation literature and the birth of modern art have Gertrude Stein-flavored events to look forward to this week.

The Smithsonian Institution’s Resident Associates Program is hosting a seminar Wednesday evening titled Gertrude Stein: A Writer Is a Writer Is a Writer. Linda Voris, an associate professor American University, will discuss the parallels between Stein’s literary and visual influences.

Friday, Artisphere in Arlington hosts “Food Meets Art: Recipes Inspired by Alice B. Toklas.” James Beard Award nominee Carole Wagner will cook a three-course meal inspired by the woman who fed Stein and guests at her salon on Rue de Fleurus in Paris.

Finally, visit The National Portrait Gallery to see the exhibit Seeing Gertrude Stein: Five Stories before it closes January 22.
