In the chit-chat following their presentation this morning of retail development grants to small businesses on H Street NE, DCist overheard some college football talk between Mayor Vince Gray and Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6).

Wells, of course, was still grinning from last night’s Bowl Championship Series national title game, in which his alma mater, the University of Alabama, beat Louisiana State University 21-0.

The game, if you missed it, was actually quite boring for the first three quarters, which were filled mostly with defensive stops and a series of Crimson Tide field goals. The lone touchdown came with just 4:36 remaining in the game on a 34-yard run by running back Trent Richardson.

After the clock ran out, Wells, a 1979 Alabama graduate, took to Twitter to boast:

At the grants event at the Atlas Performing Arts Center today, Wells chalked up his team’s show of offense to the six-week gap between the Crimson Tide’s last game on Nov. 26 and last night’s title match.

“Leave it to [Alabama head coach] Nick Saban to develop a passing game in the 40-day layoff,” Wells said, referring to the 234-yard effort by Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron.

Gray then offered a prediction for the 2012 college football season: A return to prominence by the University of Southern California, which finished the 2011 season ranked No. 6 by the Associated Press and will once again be elegible to play in bowl games.

Wells and Gray wrapped up their football talk discussing the mayor’s fellow Dunbar High School alumni who are currently playing in the NFL—Tampa Bay wide receiver Arrelious Benn, Cleveland receiver Joshua Cribbs, San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis and Miami cornerback Vontae Davis.

No word if the Wells and Gray discussed the need for reform in college football’s postseason.
