This morning President Obama’s reelection campaign launched a Twitter account in the name of first lady Michelle Obama. She hasn’t tweeted much so far, other than a general welcome. Four hours in, and @MichelleObama is well past 130,000 followers and counting. Who knows? Maybe she’ll beat Charlie Sheen in the race to one million. (Our own Marion Barry has somewhat stalled at 2,600. He can go national — he just needs to try.)

The account, predictably, is actually managed by campaign staffers and, like the @BarackObama and @VP (Joe Biden) accounts, will probably be updated by the principals themselves on an intermittent basis:

Which she did, just a few minutes ago:

Twitter’s had some recent problems with verified accounts in recent days, most notably when it gave the blue stamp of veracity to an account purporting to be that of Wendi Deng, Rupert Murdoch’s pugilistic wife. That one turned out to be a fake; what’s more, the real Deng had had her own account for quite a while.

The first lady’s account appears to be the real thing.
