Good morning, Washington. Despite our relatively mild January, be prepared for the dreaded wintry mix that is set to hit the area tonight and into tomorrow. Just about everyone is warning drivers to be especially careful in the late-night and early morning hours.
Even Some Occupiers Don’t Like Each Other: Beyond being one of the few cities to still have Occupy encampments, D.C. enjoys (or suffers, depending on your perspective) the presence of two distinct protest settlements — one at McPherson Square, the other at Freedom Plaza. And even though they might seem the same from the outside, The Washington Times reports that neither group would really want to live with the other. Last week Mayor Vince Gray proposed consolidating both camps at Freedom Plaza, but McPherson Square campers don’t want to go, and neither do existing Freedom Plaza campers really want them. Both groups cite generational differences in everything from how they run their kitchens to how confrontational they want to be with police.
No New Signs for the Verizon Center Just Yet: Caps and Wizards owner Ted Leonsis has backed off his plan to add new animated signs to the outside of the Verizon Center for now, reports the Post. The plan for up to nine new signs sparked opposition from residents and some businesses near the arena, and a D.C. Council committee was set to consider the issue next week. Leonsis has said that he wants to do more community outreach before moving forward.
Michelle Fenty is Caribbean-Bound: Former Mayor Adrian Fenty has said that he’s not planning on running for office again, and now it seems that he wouldn’t even be around to do it if he changed his mind. The Reliable Source reports that Michelle Fenty has taken a job leading the Inter-American Development Bank’s office in Trinidad and Tobago, and will be relocating to the Caribbean island. There might be some hope for fans of the former mayor, though — he didn’t respond to comments as to whether he would be moving or not.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2011, two candidates for the D.C. Council showed what true bipartisanship looks like, a bill to force restaurants to display their hygiene grade went nowhere and a group of Republicans proposed cutting spending on just about everything. In 2010, Metro looked for a new General Manager and medical marijuana advocates weren’t happy with how the District’s program was shaping up. In 2009, we got a memorable birds-eye view of President Obama’s inauguration.
