There’s plenty of interesting transit-related news floating around out there, so we’re rounding it all up for you.
More Track Work This Weekend: Nary a weekend goes by without track work on one line or another, and this one won’t be an exception. This weekend, it’s the Red Line’s turn, with track work planned for between the Bethesda and Grosvenor stations. The Medical Center will be closed altogether, and you’ll have to rely on shuttles to get between locations on the Red Line through Monday morning. There’s plenty of single-tracking, too — between East Falls Church and West Falls Church and Stadium-Armory and Cheverly on the Orange Line; between Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street on the Blue Line; between between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue on the Green Line; and between Braddock Road and Huntington on the Yellow Line. Full details are here.
A Monthly Pass for Metro?: As Metro’s board starts discussing another round of fare hikes for 2012, a fascinating idea has emerged: an unlimited-use monthly pass. The Washington Times reports that the idea emerged as board members grappled with how to justify fare increases to commuters that are seeing more erratic service. There’s no word yet on how much such a pass would cost or if it will even come to, well, pass. (The Post’s Dr. Gridlock writes that the board is also debating a number of other proposals, including a $14 day-pass and a five-cent surcharge to fund station improvements.)
Dulles Metro Without a Dulles Metro Station?: Earlier this week, what sounded like a crazy idea was floated — why not scrap the proposed Dulles Metro station altogether and replace it instead with people movers from an alternate station 1.5 miles away. It may not be such a bad idea, writes Greater Greater Washington, noting that the $70 million in savings and smoother commutes for people using the new line to get to and from work are worth taking into consideration. The only way I’ll endorse this idea is if the pledge to use the old Dulles Airport people movers to get passengers to and from the station and terminal.
Odds & Ends: If only Metro were made of M&Ms … The 10 people you don’t want to sit next to on Metro … Some very cool Capital Bikeshare maps.
