Bourbon pecan cakes, sweet potato chocolate swirl pie, homemade banh mi sandwiches, jelly donuts and fruit sushi are just a scattering of the array of goodies expected to sell at the first D.C. Grey Market of the year on Saturday.
The edible bazaar will, just as it did last year, be held at 1365 Kennedy Street NW in Brightwood. For public transportation warriors, the area is not accessible by Metrorail, but several bus routes are available.
Admission is $2 in person or $2.37 online. Web purchasers don’t need a PayPal account, but will be required to show an email or printed confirmation at the door.
Grey DC, an organization that aides aspiring food entrepreneurs from the area by providing them a low-cost marketplace to sell their fare, has been going strong for nearly a year now. In 2011, founder Maya Robinson put together four bazaars, each with around twenty listed vendors and a high volume of customers. She even raised enough money from the admission fees to award Grey DC’s first grant to Rutabaga Sweets, a jack-of-all-culinary-trades based in Alexandria. According to Grey DC’s website, the grant will help pay for Rutabaga Sweets’ business licensing fees. Most vendors produce their creations at locations where they don’t have a food-operating license, such as home kitchens; however, they can sell their goods in venues with the proper licenses that Grey DC events provide.
The organization’s Twitter account has not yet been updated of this year’s details, but to receive the latest Grey Market announcements, sign up for the newsletter online.
Saturday, January 28, 1 to 4 p.m., at 1365 Kennedy Street NW. Tickets $2, $2.37 online.
