You learn something new every day.

According to WTOP, the first Starbucks on the east coast is closing its doors at the end of the month. Unbeknownst to me was the fact that that very Starbucks is located on Wisconsin Avenue just beyond the National Cathedral.

The coffee shop, which opened in 1993, is closing due to a planned re-development of the nearby Giant supermarket; a new Starbucks will eventually locate in the new shopping center. According to WTOP, which is located just around the corner, the Starbucks was known to host former first daughter Chelsea Clinton when she attended Sidwell Friends just up the road.

If you’re a huge fan of the ubiquitous Seattle-based coffee chain, fear not. Statistically speaking, there’s no reason to lament the loss of one Starbucks. The District tops the nation in Starbucks per capita, with 1.181 stores for every 10,000 residents. Yes, in addition to being tops for cycling, rudeness and literacy, D.C. also trumps the rest of the country in opportunities to wait in line for 15 minutes before shelling out $4.50 for a mediocre latté, according to data compiled by StateMaster.com.
