Though 17 people are already vying for the seat vacated by disgraced Ward 5 councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr., the big question mark has always surrounded Tim Day, the very man responsible for Thomas’s downfall.

Now it looks like things have been cleared up — Day is jumping into the race himself. Speaking to NewsChannel 8’s Bruce DePuyt today, Day confirmed that he’d throw his lot in with the other residents seeking to fill Thomas’ seat. Day, an accountant by trade, may automatically have some more pedigree, though — it was his complaints over a non-profit linked to Thomas that unraveled an entire scheme in which the former Ward 5 councilmember stole $350,000 from the city and used it for a luxury SUV and trips.

Day challenged Thomas as a Republican in 2010, receiving just shy of six percent of the vote. But with the amount of people hoping to participate in the May 15 special election, that may be all he needs to take Thomas’ old seat.
