Well, this is one of those sad, random stories that makes you go “WTF!”
Via NBC Washington, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office reports that a passenger in two-car accident Saturday night near the intersection of state routes 9 and 704 in Catoctin, Va. died after a deer struck by one vehicle flew into the one the victim was riding in.
The car that struck the deer, a 2004 Toyota Prius, struck the deer while going eastbound on Route 9, police said. The force of the collision sent the deer airborne toward the opposite lane, where it crashed into the front window of a 2000 Nissan Xterra sport utility vehicle.
Rodolfo Diamantio Ruiz Villatoro, who was in the front passenger seat of the Nissan, sustained fatal injuries in the scene. Another rider in the SUV suffered non-life-threatening injuries, NBC Washington reports.
While rare, collisions involving deer kill about 200 U.S. residents each year, the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration says, with the peak for such instances during mating season between October and December.
