So, in the past few weeks, the style and nightlife bloggers over at Glittarazzi have transformed themselves into a crack team of relentless crime-solvers and victims’ advocates.
Just kidding, they’re still here to party. But the site, nevertheless, is applying its recently awakened vigilantism to the bottle-service beat. In the wake of last week’s scene outside the Capitol in which the FBI arrested a 29-year-old Moroccan man allegedly plotting to detonate an explosives-laden vest, Glittarazzi CEO Kelly Ann Collins has gone to work in profiling the suspected would-be terrorist.
Amine El Khalifi, who appeared in U.S. District Court in Alexandria today where he waived his right to a preliminary hearing and was ordered to remain in federal custody, was once a fixture of Glitterazzi’s regular beat—nightclubs and parties in the era of easy credit.
Between 2004 and 2008, Collins reports, Khalifi was man about town. Collins’ sources? “Former girlfriends and [acquaintances] of the alleged terrorist,” she writes. So what have we learned about the guy? Lots:
1. He was a regular in the nightlife scene from 2004 to 2008. In fact, he partied almost every night of the week.
2. He didn’t like to exercise back then, but he had body image issues. So he allegedly spent $10,000 on liposuction.
3. Those “odd jobs” the press says he did? They were odd, alright. He allegedly sold cocaine and ecstasy. He also won money by allegedly gambling (think poker).
4. He wasn’t always religious, but he allegedly quit doing “hard” drugs in 2008, became very religious (Muslim) and stopped going out when he started dating a Bulgarian chick.
5. Once upon a time, he allegedly killed his dog by beating it to death.
6. His street name was “Mino.”
7. He dated a lot of women and allegedly used to have sex with them in Washington, D.C., nightclubs (notably, Club 5, which used to be in the spot where Public Bar now sits in Dupont Circle). He also allegedly practiced some really bizarre sexual rituals.
8. In addition to the numerous residences he kept in our Nation’s capital’s surrounding neighborhoods, he also used to live in a little apartment in Arlington, Va. (Think Rossyln; North Quinn Street.)
9. He allegedly wanted to be a chef, but those plans fell through. Then, we’re told he hoped to be one of the top DJs in the world, so he bought some equipment and practiced almost every evening.
10. Back when he was ballin’ in the nightclub scene, he allegedly didn’t have a bed—he slept on a mattress on his floor—but he was a “label whore” with a closet full of Dolce and Gabbana.
Khalifi, who was living in Alexandria when he was arrested, was the subject of a lengthy FBI investigation. Though he considered several targets beside the Capitol, including an area synagogue, he never posed a threat to the public, federal authorities said last week.
Good to know party bloggers are on the case, too.
