Whether Dominique Strauss Khan and his sex parties, Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, Larry Craig and his wide stance or countless other examples of infidelity, our fair city is full of people who don’t seem to respect their matrimonial bonds. Now we have some numbers to back that up.
Yesterday the Post reported that the District is home to more registered users per capita than anywhere else in the country for an adultery-promoting porn and dating website. According to statistics compiled by AshleyMadison.com (really very NSFW), the website has 38,000 registered users in the District. Moreover, that number seems to keep growing — 30 new users register a day, and for some odd reason Monday is a peak day for new registrations.
So what makes this such a cheater-friendly place? Our work habits, according to the CEO of the company that produces the website:
First, most people who achieve a level of success do so from taking professional risks, that for the most part pay off, and this underlying personality trait may then lead these individuals to take personal risks as well.
Second, cheating is directly correlated to opportunity. The more successful you are the more you tend to travel for work and pleasure, and more often removed from your family, interacting with individuals with whom commonalities surface.
Newt Gingrich really would fit in well here, huh?
