Eamonn’s fish n’ chips by spesbach2002

Dish of the Week: Fish n’ chips
Where: Jack Rose, Eamonn’s

While many of us have recently indulged in Mardi Gras, some of us are likely not participating in Lent. However, Lent always reminds me of the Catholic adherence to abstaining from meat on Fridays, often eating the permissible fish and dairy instead. And usually that means it’s time to eat fish n’ chips.

Great fish n’ chips takes a lovely fillet of a usually neutral-tasting fish, coats it in a light batter and fries it. The fish should not be mashed up in to flakes, such as with coddies, and the batter should not be adulterated with heavy stuff like cornmeal (though that has its place).

While Eamonn’s is the natural first choice for fish n’ chips with their delectable dipping sauces, Jack Rose recently added a new bar menu that includes fish n’ chips. (And it’s a steal for $6 during happy hour.) The fish inside is cooked to moist flakiness, with a fabulously light coating. And while the chips are closer to home fries – one-inch cubes of fried potato, they are an appropriate accompaniment.

I miss the fish n’ chips that used to be served at Duffy’s, but certainly there are other great places to get some great fish n’ chips. Let us know in the comments.
