Well, this is going to be fun. Starting at 10 a.m. the District Department of Transportation is shutting off the traffic signals around Dupont Circle so the agency can install a battery-backup system.
The Post’s Mark Berman reports that the lights on the busy traffic circle will be shut off for several hours, and that DDOT is aiming to complete the upgrade and have the lights back on in time for the evening rush hour.
In the mean time, traffic-control officers will be stationed around the hectic, two-ringed circle to help cyclists, pedestrians and drivers so bold enough to drive through while the lights are out. DDOT is installing battery backups to more than 100 busy intersections around the city. A similar operation on Logan Circle last week saw traffic signals there go off for about four hours while crews installed a backup system.
UPDATE, 4 p.m.: The battery-backup system is installed and the lights are back on, DDOT says.
