Over the weekend, 31 protesters were arrested outside the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond during a demonstration in opposition to a bill that would mandate ultrasounds for women seeking abortions. Seventeen women and 14 men on Saturday for trespassing and unlawful assembly; the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that they will be arraigned today.

More on the arrests:

After the arrests, many claim they were left sitting on a bus for more than six hours without food or water while waiting to be processed and released.

Shelley Abrams, who was one of the women arrested, said Sunday afternoon that she is scheduled to appear in court on March 15 on charges of trespassing and unlawful assembly.

Abrams volunteered to walk to the bus after her arrest, rather than going limp and being carried by police officers, as some demonstrators were.

“I was sitting on the steps of our Capitol building, and I thought it was the people’s Capitol,” said Abrams, who operates an abortion clinic in Richmond. “I’m confused about how we were trespassing … because I work and pay taxes.”

She and others were held on the bus for more than six hours with their hands cuffed behind their backs while awaiting processing, she said.

Abrams also noted that they were denied water but were taken to another bus to use the bathroom in front of two female officers.
