Steve Bridges, a comedian who was able to turn himself into a mock version of every U.S. President since John F. Kennedy, was found dead at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday, the Associated Press reported. Bridges, 48, was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno while George W. Bush was in office, and Bridges’ dim-witted but rather tame sendup of the 43rd president even earned him a few trips to the White House in 2003 and 2006.

Besides Bush, Bridges also toured the country while impersonating Bill Clinton, former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and, most recently, President Obama.

Bridges’ presidential get-ups were not a simple wig and starched suit. For his Bush and Clinton acts, he enlisted the support of makeup and prosthetic artist Kevin Haney, who won an Academy Award for his work on Driving Miss Daisy. The Obama costume required four hours of makeup work done by Kazu Tsuji, who designed Jim Carrey’s prosthetics for How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the AP reported.

Occasionally, Bridges would break out a voice impersonation of an earlier president. But it was his Bush act that won him fans. In 2006, he appeared, as George W. Bush, on stage with the actual president at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner. If that performance went relatively unnoticed, it’s because that happened to be the same event that Stephen Colbert emceed and famously upended.

Bridges is survived by his parents, Thomas and Margaret Bridges; his brothers, Phillip and Jon; and a sister, Elizabeth Bridges.
