This week, a D.C. man was arrested and charged with killing his neighbor over an argument related to dog poop, of all things. But the story has gotten much deeper in the intervening days.
The accused, Ellsworth Colbert, was a well-known Ward 7 political activist—at the time of the incident, he was volunteering for Ward 7 D.C. Council candidate Kevin Chavous, Jr.’s campaign—and known quantity at the Wilson Building. But he also seems to have been known as a guy with a temper.
WTOP reports that Colbert allegedly threatened a staffer in the office of D.C. Council Chair Kwame Brown in early 2011, warning him, “Don’t make me go Southeast on you.” The incident landed Colbert on a short list of people not allowed into the Wilson Building; that order recently expired, and he was able to testify at a council committee hearing.
WJLA looked into the list of unwelcome residents at the Wilson Building and discovered that concerns over security have led council member offices to be fitted with panic buttons. All residents entering the Wilson Building are required to go through security.
On this day in 1977, the Wilson Building was the scene of a violent hostage-taking, as a group of Hanafi Muslims stormed the building and killed a radio reporter. During the siege, Councilmember Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) was also shot.
