Other theaters’ schedules for the 2012-2013 might be lousy with uninspired, populist choices, but at least there’s Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. After a streak of previews suggesting a somewhat underwhelming year ahead for D.C. theater, Woolly Mammoth’s announcement last night is a welcome, exciting relief.
Perhaps no show in its upcoming season will be more eagerly anticipated than the return of the monologuist Mike Daisey, whose Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs was not just a hoot, but a breathtaking investigation into Apple’s inner workings that helped to shed light on some truly shocking labor conditions at the Chinese factories where Apple’s perfectly designed products are assembled. Daisey, who is returning to Woolly Mammoth this summer for a brief remount of the Steve Jobs piece, comes back in March 2013 to debut American Utopias, in which he will explore the idealism of places like Disneyland, Burning Man and Zuccotti Park.
Woolly’s season kicks off in September, though, with a production of Kristoffer Diaz’s The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, a 2010 Pulitzer finalist set in the world of professional wrestling that brings back the creative team behind last year’s A Bright New Boise.
Artistic Director Howard Shalwitz, who last helmed the uneven Civilization (All You Can Eat), will direct another premiere in the upcoming season with Stupid Fucking Bird by the D.C.-based playwright Aaron Posner. Described as a “contemporary riff” on Chekhov’s The Seagull, Woolly Mammoth promises Stupid Fucking Bird will imbue the Russian classic with “exuberant scenes and songs.”

This 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist is a drop-kicking, body-slamming, balls-out theatrical happening about the larger-than-life world of professional wrestling. Tired of making other pro wrestlers look good, Macedonio “The Mace” Guerra recruits a smart-mouthed Indian kid to dethrone the current All-American champ, Chad Deity. But in wrestling, as in life, even the most idealistic freedom-fighter can be seduced by the roar of the crowd.

In this contemporary and irreverent riff on Chekhov’s The Seagull, Aaron Posner transforms the famous “subtext” of the classic play into exuberant scenes and songs.
