If the local supermarket in your tony Northwest neighborhood was as rundown as the aging Giant in Cathedral Heights, you’d probably be itching for a newer one, right? (Especially considering what it can do to property values.) Not some folks, apparently.

But the Post reported late yesterday that a battle over a new Giant along Wisconsin Avenue just north of the National Cathedral has finally come to an end, with the 1950s-era supermarket set to close once and for all on April 12 and reopen in 2014 as a new $125 million mixed-use development with a larger Giant, 137 apartments and close to 70,000 square feet of shops and restaurants.

The project has been in the planning stages for over a decade, but was repeatedly put off over resident concerns and fights that left neighbors not talking to each other.

With these squabbles behind us, we all need to refocus our energies on what matters most: Klingle Road.

The Giant on Wisconsin Avenue and Newark Street NW was fancy…when it opened in 1953.
