Put Me Out in Winter: Marion Barry is 76 years old, and he’s running for re-election. Few show up to his campaign rollout event, but that’s kind of the way he wanted it, Alan Suderman writes in this week’s City Paper cover story about the mayor-for-life in his twilight years. But even today, Barry can remind people that he is a “a once-in-a lifetime politician, a transcendent figure whose fate hasn’t been to simply govern or legislate, but to ‘lift the spirits of the people.'”
Space Oddity: Stewart Nozette was a brilliant space scientist who helped discover the existence of water on the moon. But in 2009, he pleaded guilty to trying to sell U.S. scientific secrets to an FBI agent posing as an Israeli spy. He was sentenced yesterday to 13 years in prison on espionage and tax evasion charges, the Post reports. In making his first public comments since his arrest, Nozette expressed regret for his actions, which included—as evidenced by a video prosecutors played—being “a traitor to the United States with a smile on his face.”
Scrutiny on the Bounty: Former Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for a bounty-hunting scheme he ran while with the New Orleans Saints. Although the Redskins admitted that Williams ran the same practice while coaching in Washington—players were rewarded with cash bonuses for crippling hits on opposing players—the NFL is not meting out any punishment on the Redskins for now, the Post reports.
Briefly Noted: Pregnant woman stabbed in Southeast D.C. … The politics of parking spaces … Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) honored as longest-serving female member of Congress … Gas prices up 36 cents in past year … The science of preserving the cherry trees.
This Day in DCist: In 2011, we witnessed the rebirth of D.C. brewing and the collapse of a Foggy Bottom escalator. And Odd Future was the shit, lulz. In 2010, the Red Line took it easy on the speed, and Renee Bowman was sentenced to life without parole.
