Washington has long been known as a city of geopolitical intrigue: just as U.S. spies operate throughout the world, foreign spies come to D.C. to mine for sensitive information and state secrets. Today WTOP is reporting that the new class of spies prowling the city’s streets and its diplomatic circuit are working at the behest of Iran, and just about anyone could be an unwitting victim of their crafty ways:

Iran’s U.S. diplomatic and official presence is restricted to their U.N. mission in New York, but they’ve allegedly come up with some creative ways to spy in Washington.

A former law enforcement source says they are likely working “the diplomatic cocktail scene in Washington.”

The source also says, “Not only are official corridors of Washington their targets, but the Chinatown, Adams Morgan, and U Street neighborhoods, among others, are likely being probed for young idealistic political professionals willing to divulge information about the U.S.”

“Journalists, inside the Beltway companies associated with the Department of Defense and CIA are of interest to them,” Burton says.

At a congressional hearing last week, Rep. Peter King (R-NY) claimed that “hundreds” of Hezbollah agents may be in the U.S. already. Similar concerns have been raised about Chinese spies, and last year Syria was accused of spying on local anti-Assad demonstrators. Last week, a NASA scientist was sentenced to 13 years in jail for selling U.S. secrets to Israel.

Thankfully, all I ever have to talk about is medical marijuana, bike lanes and D.C. voting rights, so I don’t know that they’re getting much from me.
