Good morning, D.C. It’s a new week, and we’re finally returning to spring-like temperatures. Though we’ll have plentiful sunshine today, temperatures will remain in the 60s, a nice break from last week’s freakish heat wave.

No Plastic Bag Fee for Prince George’s County: D.C. has one. So does Montgomery County. But despite pleas from local lawmakers, Prince George’s County won’t be getting a five-cent plastic bag fee this year. NBC4 reports that Maryland’s House Environmental Matters Committee voted down the bag fee, even though it had received widespread support from county legislators. Opponents of the measure said that they weren’t convinced of the environmental benefits and were wary of levying another fee on county residents.

O’Malley Helps Raise Money to Defend Same-Sex Marriage: With opponents of same-sex marriage in Maryland fighting to put the measure to a vote in November, Gov. Martin O’Malley is similarly preparing to defend the law that he helped pass. The Post reports that O’Malley attended a fundraising event on Friday in Connecticut to raise money for a coalition of groups looking to defend the law. Opponents have until the end of June to collect 56,000 signatures to put the law to the state’s voters; should they fail to do so or should voters side with marriage equality, same-sex marriage will become legal in January 2013.

D.C. Needs a New Emergency River Rescue Boat: If there’s a large-scale emergency on the Potomac or Anacostia rivers, D.C. has to rely on a 50-year-old emergency river rescue boat that has seen better days. According to The Examiner, a new report raises concerns that the boat, the John H. Glenn Jr., isn’t up to the task anymore and should be replaced. The boat has been used for everything from operations related to the 1982 14th Street Bridge airplane crash to breaking ice on the Potomac, but city officials worry that it’s not up to the tasks any longer.
