>> Saturday is DC SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) Day. The Georgetown Theatre Company and Women in Film & Video will host this 5th Annual all-day event featuring music, theater, storytelling performances, poetry readings, visual arts and film screenings. The day kicks off at 12 p.m. and continues as various venues until 5 p.m. Celebrate a day early with the opening reception at Baked and Wired, on Friday at 7 p.m. For a full schedule of events please visit the SWAN DAY calendar.
>> International graffiti artist SCOTCH! returns to The Fridge with new work in DISSOCIATIVE. This playful take on multiple personalities features work using a wide range of media from three characters – SCOTCH!, El Scotcho and Mr. Willington. Each personality will contribute a different style of art, all set to the sounds of video loops and beats scored just for this show. Opening reception is Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a stencil class proceeding from 2 to 4 p.m.
>> Bits of Elsewhere opens at Addision/Ripley Fine Art on Saturday. See Isabela Manalo’s exploration of white space and texture. The result is both a simple monochromatic shadow theme or bright fractal complexity. Opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
>> The Curator’s Office presents the work of Tom Green. Of This World highlights eight of the last glyphic works on paper that the artist made in 2011, prior to being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. The exhibi is presented as a deliberately informal “studio view” and will be accompanied by a broadside written by artist, curator, and art critic J.W. Mahoney. Opening reception on Saturday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
>> This Saturday, the National Gallery of Art continues its series on Robert Bresson with The Trial of Joan of Arc, playing at 2:30 p.m., drawn from court transcripts from Joan of Arc’s 15th-century heresy trial. At 4:00 p.m., the Gallery screens Lancelot du Lac, in which Bresson imagines the knights’ return to King Arthur’s court after their failed quest for the Grail. Then on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., the Gallery presents Une Femme Douce followed by L’Argent. In L’Argent, an innocent man is caught in an escalating cycle of evil when a forged 500-franc note leads to bribery, imprisonment, a marriage breakup, multiple murders, and finally his arrest.
