Yesterday might have been April Fool’s Day, but in one pocket of Northeast D.C., it was no joke when a large group of volunteers arrived to help residents with yard work and other maintenance with former President Bill Clinton leading the way.

Clinton, along with his daughter, Chelsea, was in town yesterday as part of his Clinton Global Initiative’s University program, which extends the former president’s charitable missions to college campuses. The volunteers, college students from around the world, set upon homes in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood as part of their training to work on humanitarian causes.

“There are a lot of wonderful people who live here,” Clinton told his students, according to WAMU. And residents seemed as thrilled to be receiving much-needed home repairs as they were to meet the genial ex-president.

While most of Clinton’s student recruits were painting and hammering away at Lincoln Heights homes, about 300 were at Kelly Miller Middle School building care packages with the United Services Organization to send to troops deployed overseas, WAMU reported.
