Even though the championship game is played in April, it’s not tough to see why the NCAA Division I basketball tournament is called “March Madness.” How cheesed did you get when, on that crazy evening of March 16, when two No. 15 seeds, Norfolk State and Lehigh, knocked off No. 2 seeds Missouri and Duke, respectively?
We checked.
Of the 145 people who signed up for our pool this year, not one of us predicted either of those shockers. Still, we muddled through the tournament. Weathering more upsets. Losing side bets. Gnashing our teeth and ripping up our brackets.
But in the end, it was the consensus favorite that cut down the nets in New Orleans last night when the Kentucky Wildcats stymied many attempted comebacks by the Kansas Jayhakws to win the program’s eighth national basketball championship.
So, who won the DCist pool?
Two readers—Aaron Albright and Jen Jones—tied, each having guessed correctly the winners of 42 out of 63 games. (We did not count those troublesome play-in matches.) For their savvy prognostication, Albright and Jones each win an official DCist T-shirt of their choice from our selection of apparel. (We’ll get in touch via email.)
Our staff winner—and the person with the best overall bracket—was our erstwhile photographer and roller derby chronicler James Calder, who chalks up his victory to “beginner’s luck.” We’re still contemplating his prize. So far, suggestions have ranged from letting him be editor-in-chief of DCist for an undetermined period of time (bonus vacation for Martin and me!) to an Algonquin-style roundtable dinner with the top 10 Disqus commenters.
In the women’s tournament, Baylor and Notre Dame are playing in the championship game tonight. We’ll announce the winner of that pool tomorrow.
