Contractually Obfuscated: The companies run by big-time D.C. political donor Jeffrey Thompson have been awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in District contracts over the years, WAMU reports. Thompson’s ownership of Chartered Health Plan, the District’s largest Medicaid operator that receives up to $322 million a year, is well known. Additionally, Thompson’s accounting firm has received nearly $50 million in city contracts.
Resident Bartlett: The Republican presidential primary in Maryland today is expected to be a rout for Mitt Romney. In fact, the main event in our neighbor to the north is the action in the state’s Sixth Congressional District, where longtime incumbent Rep. Roscoe Bartlett is trying to beat back a challenger from his right flank in a new congressional map that was designed to make his path to re-election in November much tougher. But Bartlett is coming in swinging, WTOP reports. Over the weekend, a group of supporters released audio of a 2008 domestic-abuse 911 call made by the then-wife of one of Bartlett’s primary challengers.
That Guy: The Post’s Dan Zak follows around shadow representative candidate Nate Bennett-Flemming, who has been working the pavement for a few years now chasing an office that offers no pay, few, if any, responsibilities and, well, barely a physical office (it’s in the basement of the Wilson Building). But Bennett-Flemming, 27, is persistent as hell—his CV reads like someone made for high-flying public service, but he’s set on being the spokesman for D.C.’s subjugated station. He’s an “overachiever gunning for a position of underachievement,” Zak writes.
Briefly Noted: Catholic University frowns on non-discrimination clause … Former Baltimore cop accused of killing neighbor now facing child porn charges … Ward 8 candidate Natalie Williams sued for sexual abuse of teenager … Virginia State Rep. David Englin dropping re-election bid after affair … Alexandria schools being investigated for cheating on GED prep.
This Day in DCist: In 2011, the Tea Party left a bear trap on the National Mall, whatever. In 2010, yay, iPads!
