It was on this day 44 years ago that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee. Not only was the life of a great fighter for civil rights cut short, but his death provoked riots in a number of cities—including D.C.—that produced destruction that can still be felt today. NBC4 reports that a vigil and wreath-laying will be take place tonight at 6 p.m. at the memorial dedicated to King along the Tidal Basin.
