It was probably never in doubt that Marion Barry would cruise past four challengers en route to winning the Democratic primary last night and all but guaranteeing himself a third term representing Ward 8 on the D.C. Council.

The mayor-for-life could barely contain his enthusiasm. Shortly before the polls closed at 8 p.m., Barry’s Twitter account exploded with life. The tweets exuded classic Barry braggadocio, and seemingly every compliment was greeted with an instant retweet.

Of course, Barry, 72, has admitted he doesn’t tap out his own tweets, instead dictating many of them to his aides. “I never said I was a master tweeter,” he said in a February appearance on The Kojo Nnamdi Show.

Still, whether the mayor-for-life is dictating tweets or outsourcing them entirely to his staff, @marionbarryjr has shown flashes of brilliance before. He used the Super Bowl to grouse about the state of the Washington Redskins; when launching his campaign, he announced that “The Barry machine has been activated.”
