Opening day at Nationals Park was brisk, but sunny. Gio Gonzalez was sharp, allowing just two hits and striking out seven Cincinnati Reds in his first home start as a National. But with the Nats up 2-0 in the ninth inning, new closer Brad Lidge came in and promptly blew the save. Free baseball on opening day!
So how did the Nationals pull victory from the jaws of bad relief pitching? The Reds’ late-inning bullpen was even worse than Lidge. In the bottom of the 10th, with runners on second and third base, Reds reliever Alfredo Simon bounced a pitch at the feet of Roger Bernadina, allowing Ryan Zimmerman to hustle home and slide across the plate for the 3-2 win.
