That’s a lot of wood in that guitar. Photo from Cheap Trick’s website. If you recently caught yourself thinking that it has been way too long since you heard “I Want You to Want Me” or “Surrender” live, head down to the National Mall on Sunday for the annual Earth Day rally—Cheap Trick is headlining the show!
The aging rock band will be joined by Dave Mason, Kicking Daisies and The Explorers Club for the day-long event, which kicks off at noon and will include speakers, an eco-village, educational workshops, and a voter registration drive. (By comparison, in 2009 the Flaming Lips headlined, and in 2010 it was Sting. Last year the concert was put off due to the economy.)
Speakers are set to include EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Atlanta Falcons fullback Ovie Mughelli, Indy Car driver Leilani Münter, members of Congress including Reps. John Dingell and Edward Markey, representatives from U.S. government agencies, and the heads of major national and international NGOs.
Is there anything in particular linking Cheap Trick to the environmental movement? Not that we can tell, other than the fact that they’ll be joining Aerosmith on the 2012 Global Warming Tour. And no, there’s also nothing environmental about that either—the Boston band just wants to melt your face off, it seems.
