The NBA’s all-time leading scorer, a TV doctor and a bunch of D.C. media types, were announced as the contestants in the upcoming “Power Players” edition of Jeopardy!, which is filming this weekend at DAR Constitution Hall.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is probably the least “D.C.” of any of the names announced, but he’s certainly the coolest. The “Power Players” series, which will air in May, features mostly wonkish famous people competing for $50,000 for the charity of their picking. The TV doctor is Mehmet Oz, who launched from Oprah Winfrey’s production family into the only talk show in which the host wears medical scrubs. Also playing are CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Lizzie O’Leary; the BBC’s Katty Kay; NBC’s Chris Matthews, Chuck Todd and Kelly O’Donnell; CNBC’s David Faber; The New York Times’ Thomas L. Friedman; the Chicago Tribune’s Clarence Page and Fox News’ Chris Wallace. Two former White House press secretaries, Dana Perino and Robert Gibbs, are also on the slate. As is the comedian Lewis Black.
Look, we like Lewis Black just fine, but we’re going to get over our distaste for the Lakers and pull for Abdul-Jabbar. After all, how often does one get to see Capt. Roger Murdock match wits with TV talking heads?
Tickets for Jeopardy! are long gone, but the program is going to tape an entire week’s worth of shows in a single day on Saturday. In addition to the nerd-celebrity version, Jeopardy! is also filming its Teen Tournament in Washington on Friday.
