The stadium’s team of mowers—it’s probably fair to call them lawn engineers—choose one of three of four basic designs and go about cutting and angling individuals blades of grass to get the distinctive patterns we see in person or on TV. The only thing they’ve recently done away with is the curly-W design that was occasionally cut into the grass—it’s too complicated and can make the ball bounce in weird ways, they say.

>> A Maryland teen who killed three friends after he drove and crashed a car while drunk had his original 20-year sentence cut by 12 years yesterday, reports WJLA. A panel of three judges said that Kevin Coffay shouldn’t be made to pay for the state’s larger problem of drunk driving and that prosecutors never gave him credit for pleading guilty; his new eight-year sentence is in line with Maryland sentencing guidelines.

>> Metro police arrested a Metrobus driver yesterday in Arlington after he assaulted a passenger during a dispute over a fare, writes NBC4. After the incident, the passenger got off of the bus and the driver continued on his route. He called in the incident and was arrested at the Pentagon City stop.
