Good morning, D.C., and happy Earth Day! Don’t forget, if you’re willing to brave the elements and celebrate Mother Earth, the annual Earth Day Rally is taking place on the National Mall from noon to 7 p.m. Cheap Trick will headline the concert portion of the event.
>> Occupy D.C. is a fading memory, but today the Post looks into one factor that motivated the group’s four-month-long protest at McPherson Square: the one percent. Specifically, what it takes to be part of the one percent locally. Its conclusion? Around $527,000 a year, much more than the national average of $387,000. D.C. has the highest threshold for one-percenters ($617,000), while Fairfax trails behind ($532,000). The overwhelming majority of the local one percent are white, and the standards for being considered among the highest strata of local society has gone up over the decades.
>> All of the roadway construction around the region serves a purpose, but for now it’s mostly creating a lot more traffic. According to the Examiner, all the work on local roads has expanded roadway congestion to the hours outside of the traditional rush, leaving motorists stranded even during late-night hours. Government officials and contractors say they have little choice but to work at night, since closing down lanes of traffic would be even more disruptive during the day.
>> A U.S. Marine was stabbed and killed early Saturday morning outside his barracks in Southeast D.C., reports WJLA. Another Marine was detained by police and will be charged with the killing, which started with an argument between the two. WJLA sources tell them that the suspect made a homophobic statement before stabbing the victim.
