Good morning, Washington. This is more like spring weather, isn’t it? Our sloppy Sunday will continue into today with rain expected throughout the morning and temperatures staying in the upper 50s and low 60s. Only Wednesday seems like a good bet for more of the warm weather we’ve had over the recent weeks; other than that; wear long sleeves this week.
1984 H Street Killing Goes Back on Trial: In 1984, a D.C. woman was brutally killed in an alley just off of H Street NE, a crime that led to eight convictions. But today the case will be reopened in D.C. Superior Court as new evidence has surfaced to raise questions about who really killed the victim, Catherine Fuller. The Post reports that a judge will consider whether to grant a new trial in the case or exonerate those found guilty altogether. Ever since the trial, evidence has emerged casting doubt on claims by prosecutors that the killing was the handiwork of members of the Eighth and H Crew; witnesses now claims that James McMillan, who is serving a life sentence in Virginia for a deadly attack on a woman, was in the same alley were Fuller was killed.
National Harbor Casino May Not Come to Pass: As Maryland legislators wrangle with the possibility of a special session to iron out differences over the state’s budget, one thing may fall by the wayside—a $1 billion casino that was proposed for the National Harbor. The Examiner reports that Gov. Martin O’Malley doesn’t want the casino—part of a broader plan to expand gambling in the state—included in a special session, should he choose to call one. Before the casino could become a reality, the House of Delegates would have to give its approval and the measure would have to be voted on by Maryland residents in November.
Briefly Noted: Property taxes in Arlington County to increase by 1.3 percent … Free parking outside Giant near National Cathedral comes to an end … One person killed in I-495 crash this morning … Scientists use computer simulations to forecast future of Chesapeake Bay … More charter schools may be coming to D.C. … VRE fares to go up by three percent.
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2011, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier got a raise (despite a budget crunch) and the Washington Capitals moved to the second round of the playoffs. In 2010, we got a first look at Star and Shamrock and we wondered what was in store for the future of the D.C. voting rights movement.
